Ever since I was in GCSE and got taught about the Cold War I couldn’t help but be intruded by politics. Politics is quite possibly the closest you could get me to gossip and this book is about three quarters gossip and one quarter doom and gloom but even the doom and gloom is gossipy.But first onto the cool gossipy stuff. The Secret Service has ultimately one job and that is to protect the president this means that they have to deal with the presidents off camera. During this time we learn the following.
John Kennedy slept around in a BIG way
Lyndon Johnson was often drunk and rude
Richard Nixon was just strange and his wife was constantly drunk
Gerald ford was a cheap git.
And the list goes on…
While some of it is old news to me some of these are surprising simply because how stupid some of the people they are protecting are. As you go through the rest of the book it starts to introduce a new theme of how the secrete service is slowly getting stretched and under funded and cutting corners so that it risks the very people they aim to protect and to be honest is a bit of a downer and by the end of it you realise that this book has a duel agenda. To make you care for the Secret Service but also expose the flaws to hopefully show congress that the Secret Service needs help.
Anyway if you love political gossip and like those quirky stories about the president that make your realise that as influential they may be the president is only human then this is the book for you, but it comes with a warning the bitching becomes possibly a bit repetitive.
After Effects of this book.
- You may start to talk about past presidents anecdotes in convocations with friends who may not appreciate it.
- Because I bought the hard back version of this book (as a treat to myself) I’m half tempted to throw away the tacky paper cover and place it bare on the book shelf so my library looks a bit more classy.
